Background and Aims:

It is impossible to imagine modern medicine and oncology and anesthesiology in particular, without totally implantable central venous access ports. The following properties are normally associated with the port: it is safe, easy to use, implanted only once during the treatment and have minimal risks related to its insertion and use. 


Between January 2008 and December 2014, subcutaneous venous ports were placed in 400 adult patients with cancer. A single type of port was made of polyurethane (7F) or silicone (8F) catheter  (POLYSITE® Standard ™; Laboratories Perouse, France). 94.3% (377) of ports were inserted into the jugular vein, 5.2 % (21) and 0.5% (2) were placed into the subclavian and femoral vein respectively. 


The rate of minor complication related to the procedure was 0.5% (total: 2 cases; 1 hematoma during local anesthesia, and 1 early hematoma). One patient only (0.25%) had a major complication of pneumothoraxe. No deaths related to the port were observed in this series.

The catheter usage mean duration was between 1 and 36 months. The rate of late complications was (36 cases). The diagnoses in 26 (6.5%) ports: port pocket infections (0.5%), broken or torn catheter (3.5%); catheter-induced venous thrombosis (2.5 %) (p=0.04. 10 (2.5%) cases developed minor complications where port removal was not needed. There were no patients with port-related bacteraemia or sepsis. 


The use of totally implantable central venous access ports is a safe method of venous access and a more efficient option in oncology of adult patients.
