Background and Aims:

Although arrhythmias are commonly observed during anaesthesia there is no literature data about their occurrence during kidney surgery in the lateral position when the bed is scissored so the legs and head are low.

The aim of this study was to define what types of arrhythmias are the most common during kidney surgery and whether combining general with epidural anaesthesia prevents from them.

Methods:

After EC approval, 50 adults, ASA 1-3, without prior cardiac or arrhythmia history, undergoing open kidney cancer surgery, were randomly allocated to receive general or combined epidural/general anaesthesia. The anaesthetic technique was standardized. The Holter monitor was applied at the evening before the surgery, tracing continuously for a period of 24 hours.

Results:

There was no difference in demographic data. In 66% the arrhythmias were observed and there was no statistically significant difference between groups. Table 1 presents the number of arrhythmias observed.

Conclusions:

The perioperative cardiac arrhythmias are common and occur regardless of the anaesthetic technique.
